Plus Saratoga wins baseball title, Queensbury girls lax wins in closing seconds & more

Columbia accomplished a school first, and through doing so, a member of their team broke a school record of theirs.

The Blue Devils Girls Lacrosse program is heading to states for the first time after winning their first ever Sectional Championship, beating Bethlehem 10-9 in overtime to claim the Class B title.

But getting to that point was quite an undertaking of its own accord.  The Blue Devils were down by two goals with less than a minute to play.  Then came Kaitlin Bogucki to the rescue.  The Siena commit, having already tied Ciara Mazzone for most goals in Columbia Girls Lacrosse program history, topped that mark with 35 seconds left to play in regulation to pull the Blue Devils within 1.  Then off the faceoff win, Bogucki came back again to tie the game to force the sudden victory overtime.

And with less than a minute in the first overtime session, Bogucki would do it again, this time not only padding her goal record, but tying Mazzone for the program's career point record at 174 points with her 7th point of the game and 6th goal, as Columbia would win the title over Bethlehem.

Bogucki will have a chance to break that point record Saturday in the Regional Finals at Queensbury High School.

QUEENSBURY WINS IN DRAMATIC FASHION

Never mind the 18-6 regular season win for Queensbury over Burnt Hills.

When the two Spartans play, regardless of the sport, expect the playoffs to carry some excitement between the two schools separated by about 35 miles as the crow flies.

Every time Queensbury tried to jump ahead, Burnt Hills would close the gap in the Class C Championship.  This was best shown with a minute left, when Queensbury scored the go-ahead goal, only for Margaret Lescault to answer back for Burnt Hills.  Then Kady Duffy, sister to Army Women's Lacrosse star Brigid Duffy, came up big for Queensbury as she netted her 7th goal thanks to a Free Position with 6.5 seconds left.  The goal broke the 11-11 deadlock to give Queensbury their 7th straight Sectional Championship.

NISKAYUNA, ALBANY ACADEMY ROLL EASILY

The other two girls lacrosse titles belong to Niskayuna, who claimed the Class A title after being Saratoga.  Niskayuna scored 7 goals unaswered to surpass the Blue Streaks, who came in as defending sectional champions.  In Class D, Albany Academy powers past Voorheesville to claim the title.

The regional finals are Saturday, June 7th at Queensbury High School.

SARATOGA SPRINGS SWEEPS TO THE BASEBALL SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks baseball team is getting hot at the right time.

They win their Best of 3 series against the Colonie Wolfpack two games to none to claim the Class AAA Sectional Championship.  The win is the Blue Streaks 12th in a row, and on Monday their pitching crew held Colonie to two hits.

Saratoga moves on to face Cicero-North Syracuse on Saturday over at Onondaga Community College, with the winner of that game getting to play in the State Semifinals next weekend in Binghamton.

FIRSTS FOR MECHANICVILLE, NORTH WARREN

Mechanicville finished off their Cinderella run as they beat Cobleskill-Richmondville in the Class B Sectional Championship, starting off the tournament as the #7 seed.  It is the first baseball title in school history for the Red Raiders.  And in Warren County, North Warren adds Baseball to their list of championships after the Cougars defeated Hartford/Fort Edward in the Class D Championship.

Both teams advance to the Regional Semifinals.
