It turns out U.S. residents aren’t the only ones who are spending more time indoors to escape the extreme heat. Billions of insects and other pests have taken up residence inside homes all over the country in hopes of cooling down. “Just like we don’t want to be outside in the heat, neither does anything else,” says Kellan McDiarmid, a manager with Raleigh-based exterminator Triangle Home Services. In fact, Triangle has seen a 30 percent rise in business as more and more people are finding unwelcome guests in their homes, McDiarmid says. One way to keep bugs out of your house is to keep them away from your house, McDiarmid says. Ants and roaches like to take shelter between dead leaves in gutters, which lead them to entering the home, he notes. They’re also attracted to moisture, he adds. “Making sure trees, shrubs, bushes stay trimmed away from the house so they’re not bridging over to the house,” McDiarmid says. “Making sure if you have a crawl space, making sure there’s no sort of moisture issues in the crawl space.” What insects have you seen more of since temperatures started rising?
